Exploring Samhain’s symbolism, rituals, and magickal energy of reflection and renewal.
The Energies of Samhain
Samhain (pronounced Sow-in) marks the final harvest and the turning of the Wheel into winter—a liminal time when the veil between worlds grows thin. It’s a sacred pause between endings and beginnings, honoring death, release, and transformation.
This is the season to slow down, listen deeply, and honor what has completed its cycle—whether that’s relationships, identities, or patterns ready to be laid to rest. As the Earth quiets, we too are invited to descend inward, reflect, and tend the inner hearth of our souls.
My Samhain Practice
For me, Samhain is a time to celebrate all that has gone from my life—whether that’s someone I love who has passed, or old friendships, connections, beliefs, or habits whose energies have waned and been released.
I believe it’s important to honor all that has come and gone before. There’s a freedom in this practice, and this season always reminds me how love transcends time and space. Though I approach this Sabbat with deep reverence, I also hold it with lightness—because this is the time of year I feel the closest connection to my loved ones across the veil.
Below are a few ways I celebrate this sacred season each year.
- Cleansing and Re-Styling My Altar
My altar is the heart of my Samhain rituals. Each year, I keep it simple—decorating it with items that honor each person or pet I’ve loved who has crossed over.
One year, I found small wooden leaf ornaments and wrote the names of my loved ones on them, hanging them from altar branches. This year, I created tiny decoupaged canvases with their photos. On Samhain night, I’ll place them on the altar one by one, having quiet conversations with each soul and sending love across the veil. - Serving a Dumb Supper
A traditional Dumb Supper is one of my favorite ways to honor ancestors and departed loved ones. On Samhain night, I set an extra place at the table, adding a card with their names.
When dinner is served, a small portion of each dish is placed at that setting—an open invitation for those who can no longer join in body but remain with us in spirit. As we eat, we share stories, laughter, and memories, turning the meal into a sacred celebration of connection and remembrance. - Conducting a Life Review & Yearly Audit
Between Samhain and Yule, I take time for what I call my Life Review—a personal ritual of reflection and release that helps me close the year with intention.
The energy of this season is waning, calling us inward to rest, reflect, and realign. My process includes:
- Reading my journals from the past year.
This act of self-witnessing always brings insight and clarity.
- Completing a Life Audit.
This practice became the foundation for my Step Into Your Magick™ Self-Care Assessment—a transformative tool I now share with clients to help them reflect with curiosity and compassion rather than judgment. - Beginning a new seasonal journal.
I record what I’m ready to release and what I’m inviting in for the year ahead. These reflections become the fertile ground for my Winter Solstice intentions and the energetic anchor for the year to come.
This process unfolds slowly, often over several days. It’s not about rushing—it’s about honoring the natural rhythm of endings that prepare us for new beginnings.
Closing Reflections
Samhain invites us to remember that death and rebirth are two sides of the same sacred spiral. The more we honor what has completed, the more space we create for new magick to unfold.
I hope these rituals inspire you to create your own ways of celebrating this powerful season.
